1. 表示“担心的”、“焦虑的”。如:
She looked anxious. 她显得很焦急的样子。
Don’t be anxious if I’m late. 如果我来迟了,不要着急。
其后通常接介词 about, for。如:
I’m rather anxious about him. 我为他相当着急。
He was anxious for his family, who were traveling abroad. 他担心在国外旅行的家人。
We’re anxious about (for) her health. 我们担心她的健康。
He’s anxious for (about) her safety. 他为她的安全着急。
注:有时用作定语,表示“令人焦急的”。如:
That week was an anxiOU8 time for all of us·那个礼拜是使我们所有的人都焦急的时间。
2. 表示“热切的”、“渴望的”,其后通常接介词 for。如:
I’m anxious for a computer. 我渴望有台电脑。
We were anxious for news of your safe arrival. 我们很想得到你安全到达的消息。
注:be anxious for 既可表示“为……担心”,也可表示“渴望得到……”,具体含义视语境而定。
3. 表示渴望或想要做某事,其后接不定式。如:
She was anxious to have his advice. 她急于想听他的意见。
We are anxious to know the result. 我们渴望知道结果。
注:有时不定式前可以有 for sb。如:
He was anxious for her to marry him. 他渴望她能嫁给他。
4. 有时后接 that 从句,此时从句谓语一般都用“should+动词原形”这样的虚拟语气。如:
I’m anxious that I shouldn’t be in the way. 我期盼我不会碍事。
The committee is anxious that this matter should be kept secret. 委员会切望这件事保密。
He is anxious that classes should be started at once. 他急于马上开始课程。
比较:
He’s anxious that she (should) come to see him.
=He is anxious for her to come to see him. 他很希望她能来看他。
