2015年5月2日SAT写作题目:Is having too many choices a problem?
解析
今天的SAT考试并没有在 Essay 方面为难学生,仍旧遵循了传统的出题思路。一些学生反映看过甚至写过类似的题目。没错,2010年12月和2011年12月的SAT亚太考场题目与此相似,分别是:Is it better for people to have limited choices? (2010.12),Do people benefit more from having many choices or few choices? (2011.12)。
“Choice类”的题目我们该如何破解呢? 如果回答YES,可以说面对太多的选择人们会犹豫不定、缺乏深刻的判断和比较,容易做出错误的决定;而认为too many choices is not a problem 的同学们可以说,更多的选择给人们更多的机会去发挥潜力、实现目标等。

Most people prefer to have as many choices as possible, thinking the more choices they have, the higher chances there are for them to achieve their goals. This psychology, however, holds little truth. When choosing from excessive choices, people would customarily find themselves stuck in perplexity and incapable of thorough thinking. However, few choices will coerce people to make a choice and commit themselves to take actions.
Granted too many choices, people will be occupied with anxious consideration about which one to choose and have less composure to analyze prudently. This is especially true in today’s world of abundant products and their exaggerated advertisements. For instance, all dairy companies allege that their products are in rich nutrition and indispensable to a healthy body and a strong brain. Confronted with such a wide variety of products, customers not only spend more time on decision-making but also incline to make a wrong choice. A large population chose Sanlu product, but it turned out in 2008 that Sanlu milk power was adulterated with melamine, a toxic chemical material, in order to make its protein content appear higher than it actually was. 54,000 infants developed kidney stone and four died. If there were less milk products, it would be easier for customers to choose from, and easier for government to regulate illicit mercantile activities.
On the contrary, when people are cornered to only one choice, they will make all efforts to overcome whatever adversities. Nick Vujicic, an Australian motivational speaker, opened himself a window when all doors were closed. He was born without all four limbs, and others derided him as trash and a burden for his family who can achieve nothing. This pessimism nearly condemned Vujicic to suicidal, but something dawned on him when he saw a newspaper article about a man dauntlessly dealing with his own severe disorder. It was imperative for him to remain optimistic and active to prove his capability. He participated in sports and strived to take care of his own daily activities such as brushing teeth and driving cars. Furthermore, he even established his NPO Life without Limbs to help people with similar mischance and delivered inspiring speeches to the world. All these relentless endeavors eventually built his ultimate achievement as a famed speaker worldwide. While limited choices might frustrate people at first, they are more likely to stimulate people to stick with that choice and give a full display of their potentials.
In conclusion, too many choices are not as beneficial as people have expected. Rather, it is limited choices that contribute to more groundbreaking achievements.
